Welcome to the Colville Community Garden homepage—we’re excited to offer information about the new garden, our board and community donors, and the 2010 gardening season. The Colville Community garden was donated by the St. Paul Lutheran Church to the Colville community as a place for people without garden space to grow their own nutritious organic groceries. 6-foot fencing, a generous water supplies, and a perennial garden and general hang-out area maintained by the Colville Area Gardening Friends were installed in 2009 through donations of time and money by generous community donors. Gardeners have been planting crops this spring. The garden provides individuals and families access to plots where they can grow food for their own tables, as well as plots where the food grown by volunteers will be donated to our local food bank. The garden has more than 80 small, medium, and large plots, with raised beds for gardeners with limited mobility. Plot rental is from $10 to $40, and for those on a tight budget, some plots have been prepaid by a generous donation. Several plots are already rented so don’t hesitate to fill out an application form and view the Colville Community Garden Handbook. Be sure to check the appropriate box if you’re on a limited income and would like a plot that has been prepaid.
Colville Community Garden is located at 170 B Highway 20 East
Community gardens are springing up in urban areas across the nation providing gardeners access to garden plots and fresh produce. Gardeners and volunteers find opportunities to engage in satisfying labor and neighborhood improvement while enhancing their sense of community and connection to the environment. According to the Green Institute in Minneapolis, some benefits of community gardens are: · increased property values; · decreased use of land fill space through composting; · a healthier citizenry through exercise and improved diets (home grown food is nutritionally superior); · an increased sense of wellness and belonging; · inexpensive (mostly labor) “pocket parks” that enhance the beauty of the community and in our case will be a lovely addition to the Rotary Club Walking path; and · unique opportunities for relationships with people we might not otherwise meet.
The Colville Community Board has worked diligently to provide a garden space for all of us. Please use this site and our contact information to answer any questions you may have regarding plots, volunteering, and donating. |
